At the beginning of Bon, we build a small fire at our doors so that our ancestor's souls
can come back to the right house without getting lost. We call the fire "mukaebi"(Fire for welcoming ancestors). After we hold a memorial service to remember them and Bon ends, we build another fire to see them off. This fire is called “okuribi.”
There are various patterns of "okuribi" in Japan. “Gozan no Okuribi” in Kyoto is the most famous. Huge kanji characters and symbols are set on fire one by one on five mountain sides.
As the fire burns, people nostalgically say goodbye to their ancestors and to the summer season.
